Jaleel McLaughlin scored three times and ran for 203 yards on 20 carries and Youngstown State held control most of the way in a 31-14 win against Duquesne in the season opener for the Penguins on Saturday. It was Penguins 38th straight home win against teams from Pennsylvania. McLaughlin entered the contest with 6,578 yards and 65 career touchdowns. He is one of 18 running backs in NCAA history to rush for more than 6,500 yards.

The Dukes (0-2) posted their only lead when Joe Mischler threw a 45-yard touchdown to Abdul Janneh on a five-play, 75- yard drive to start the game. Youngstown State responded with a 12-play, 75-yard scoring drive that ended when McLaughlin ran it in from the 3. McLaughlin's 13-yard run with 6:43 before halftime gave the Penguins the lead for good. His 54-yard dash with 4:48 sealed it. Mischler had two scores to Janneh - the other a 16- yarder in the third quarter - but Youngstown State's defense intercepted Mischler three times. He threw for 274 yards. - Youngstown State/AP College Football

Jim Tressel is stepping down as the president at Youngstown State at the age of 69. The former Ohio State football coach has been at YSU since 2014, making the transition to academia following his resignation at OSU. It was his second stint at the university after serving as head coach of the Penguins from 1986-2000. During that span, he went 135-57-2 (23-14 in conference play) while winning four Division I-AA national titles in four appearances.

"It is with an abundance of gratitude and thankfulness that Ellen and I plan to step aside as President and First Lady of our beloved YSU, effective February 1, 2023," Tressel said in an email to the Youngstown State community. "It has been truly a blessing and labor of love to serve Youngstown State University in a number of capacities, and we will continue to do so, in whatever fashion that the YSU Board of Trustees sees fit." Tressel was hired as the Buckeyes' head coach in 2001, compiling a 106-22 record (66-14). He reached the BCS National Championship Game three times, winning it in 2002 with a 14-0 record. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Former Ohio State safety Marcus Hooker announced Friday that he is transferring to Youngstown State. The announcement came nearly a month after he put his name in the transfer portal, leaving the Buckeyes after four seasons. Hooker once held a prominent role in Ohio State's secondary, starting the first half of the season in 2020 at free safety before being passed on the depth chart by Josh Proctor. His spot in the rotation was further diminished after his second drunk driving arrest last spring, leading to a months-long suspension that sidelined him for all of spring practice.

While returning to the team in the summer, he was largely limited to a role on special teams in 2021, appearing on defense in only three games. He finished with nine tackles. Hooker was the last of Ohio State's scholarship transfers to settle on a school, as well as the second to end up at a Football Championship Subdivision program after former Buckeyes linebacker K'Vaughan Pope announced last month that he was heading to Tennessee State. - Columbus Dispatch

Marcus Hooker's uneven Ohio State football career has apparently reached its conclusion. Cleveland.com confirmed a 247 Sports report that Hooker has entered the transfer portal. The senior safety became the fourth Buckeye to submit his intent to transfer since the Spring Game and the 10th on defense to do so since the end of last season. Hooker appeared on the verge of a breakthrough in 2020 when he beat out Josh Proctor for the free safety job to open the season. That position remained an area concern all season, however. When Hooker was injured late in the season, Proctor reclaimed the starting job and held it through the national championship game.

In the offseason, Hooker was arrested for the second time in his career for a drunk driving incident. He pled guilty to operating a vehicle while impaired and received a three-day suspended jail sentence, had his driver's license suspended for one year with limited driving privileges and paid a $375 fine. Hooker was originally suspended indefinitely but remained with the program and on scholarship. He played mostly special teams in 2021. - Raleigh News Observer

Michigan State saw two more players enter the transfer portal on Friday as fourth-year junior offensive lineman James Ohonba and fourth-year junior tight end Trenton Gillion were the latest to submit their name. Gillison (6-foot-4, 245 pounds) was a four-star recruit from Pickerington, Ohio, who played in two games as a true freshman in 2018 and showed plenty of promise, though he never was able to establish himself as the primary tight end. His best season was as a redshirt freshman in 2019 when he had 12 receptions for 147 yards, including four catches for 88 yards in the Pinstripe Bowl win over Wake Forest. Gillison appeared in four games in 2020 and played in six this season with one reception for 5 yards. - Detroit News
